I work actively and directly. I pay attention to the patterns underneath the conflict—the shutdown, defensiveness, blame, avoidance, resentment, passive-aggression, scorekeeping, and “fine” that is very much not fine.
I’m not interested in helping you win the argument.
I’m interested in helping you stop destroying the relationship while trying to protect yourselves inside it.
That means:
I will interrupt you
I will challenge both of you
I will push for honesty
I will help translate what’s actually happening underneath the anger, withdrawal, criticism, or lack of sex
And yes, sometimes we’re going to laugh. Because some of the things humans do in relationships are absurd. Humor can loosen shame, lower defenses, and help us look at hard things without drowning in them.
